THE COMPANY’S HISTORY
The first written evidence of the company was in 1900, when Thomas Shirley inherited a house, 26 Canterbury Street with an adjoining small warehouse from his father.
Thomas Shirley was an entrepreneur and dealt in many things including hay and straw, which at the time was probably in strong demand. Thomas’s mother Ellen, was in business in her own right as a ‘Marine Store Dealer’, which is defined as anyone who bought or sold reclaimable or recyclable materials. Thomas had knowledge of this trade and eventually made it his own.
Thomas died at about 40 years of age and left his widow, Mary to run the business. Mary then employed her nephew Arthur. Arthur was the grandfather of the present day MD.
The company continued to develop the site on Canterbury Street and expand its business.
In June 2010, came a pivotal moment in the company’s history, celebrating both 110 years of trading and the relocation to a purpose built facility at the services, Blackburn Interchange, Junction 4 on the M65.
The company has established a firm reputation both locally and nationwide and is growing steadily, with constant inward investment and high levels of service being the cornerstones of the business.
Shirley’s are members of the IWPPA (Independent Waste Paper Processors Association), and are a fully registered waste carrier & broker and have exempt license status on the facilities.
